Negotiations with Amazon broke down, 8,500 Italian employees will go on strike

According to a Reuters report on March 11, the Italian trade union said on Thursday that Amazon's employees in Italy will go on a 24-hour strike on March 22 after negotiations with Amazon on working conditions broke down.

It is reported that the global e-commerce giant Amazon has 8,500 employees in Italy, which will be the first strike for all its Italian employees. The strike will affect all employees of Amazon's supply chain, cargo terminal and delivery business in Italy.

Italy's national unions Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl and Ultrasporti e Assoespressi said that negotiations on Amazon's employee contracts in Italy broke down because the company was unwilling to actively resolve the issues raised.

It is understood that the labor union has asked Amazon to modify several aspects of the employee contract, including workload, shifts, contract conditions, lunch coupons, performance-linked bonuses and travel expenses. In addition, the labor union also called for reducing the working hours of drivers.

In the statement, the union held that Amazon ignored the national contract rules and violated the fair system. An Amazon spokesperson said in an e-mail statement that the union's claims were not true, and the company had already met twice with the union in January.

So far, Amazon has invested 5.8 billion euros (about 6.94 billion US dollars) in Italy. In January of this year, Amazon also announced that it would invest another 230 million euros to open two logistics centers.
