The boom continues. After the Spring Festival, congestion at ports in Europe and the US has not eased as expected, but has spread everywhere. Major international ports such as Los Angeles, Auckland, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Liverpool and Le Havre continue to be congested, including Chitagong and Singapore.

Retailers such as Peloton are facing a costly logistics nightmare as record congestion at ports around the world causes delays, according to US media reports.

Between Dec. 22 and Jan. 2, a ship carrying 197 containers of bicycles and merchandise docked off the Port of Los Angeles, according to MarineTraffic Marinetraffic's global traffic data. The ship was allowed to dock after Christmas, but was 12 days behind schedule for delivery.

The difficulties faced by bicycle retailer Peloton in moving goods are just one example of the variety of goods held up at US ports.

Congestion of Shipping

Forcing more goods to air

A record number of containers arriving at the Port of Los Angeles has slowed imports to the United States, and congestion at the port has led some companies to switch from sea to air to get popular or seasonal items onto shelves more quickly.

Freightos Chief Marketing Officer said: "While air cargo was in a volatile period during the first few months of the outbreak, it grew by 400% between February 2020 and April 2020, when shipping became a bottleneck in the global supply chain and in some cases, air freight became a more viable option."

Peloton's chief executive, said in the letter: "the growth of the global transportation business, lead to serious delays of all kinds of goods that enter the port of the United States, including the Peloton products these unpredictable delays caused many people to arrange the delivery time, because the Peloton bicycles, pedal and accessories in the port are detained for more than five times as usual."
