What is "outside storage yard" and how does it affect the efficiency of picking up containers?

Sunny Worldwide LogisticsIt is a logistics company with more than 20 years of transportation experience, specializing in markets such as Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia. It is more of a cargo owner than a cargo owner~

Generally, both heavy and empty containers are stacked at the dock. Why are there external storage yards? Why does the pick-up of goods sometimes take place very quickly, while other times it takes several days? Today we will talk about the relationship between container yards and container lifting efficiency!

"Container yard" and "container picking efficiency"

Container yard: refers to a place used for handing over and storing containers in a container terminal or in the area surrounding a terminal. Sometimes a container yard is also called a yard. Imported goods will be stored in the storage yard. When the cargo owner needs to pick up the container, he will also go to the storage yard to pick up the container.

The speed of container pickup mainly depends on whether the shipping company stores the goods in a public terminal yard or a dedicated terminal yard. A dedicated terminal means that a certain shipping company cooperates with the terminal, and container ships have priority to dock and load and unload cargo. An exclusive yard refers to a yard that is dedicated to stacking the container cargo of the shipping company. For example: EXX route, a subsidiary of the CMA CGM Group, has an exclusive storage yard at the TraPac terminal.

In addition, the reason that affects the efficiency of picking up the cabinet is that the container does not match the frame. If the container matches the frame, the truck driver can take the truck head over and pick up the cabinet directly.

Take the situation at container yards in the United States as an example: Because American truck heads and frames are separated, during the peak shipping season, many truck teams will delay picking up containers because they have not waited for matching frames.

"Inner Yard" and "Outer Yard"

Container yards can be divided into inner yards and outer yards. The inner and outer storage yards are another reason that affects the efficiency of container lifting. The in-port storage yard is usually located within the scope of the dock, a certain distance from the hinterland of the port; the storage yard outside the port is located outside the scope of the dock, generally on the passage between the port and the hinterland.

There are two types of stacking in the outer yard. One is wheeled, that is, the containers are stored alone in the yard and equipped with a frame. The truck driver only needs to bring the truck head to pick up the container directly. This kind of container pickup is very efficient, and container goods in the outer yard do not need to be reserved in advance to pick up the container.

Another way of stacking is ground. The containers here will be stacked layer by layer. In addition, there are no gantry cranes in the outer yard that can move back and forth, left and right, only reach stackers. The reach stacker can only lift the top container, so the containers piled on the ground are waiting to be matched with the frame. It takes a certain amount of time to find the container and finally take it out, so the efficiency of lifting the container will be much slower.
